Throne and Liberty Item Level Guide: How Gear Progression Works After Nix

Throne and Liberty Item Level Guide 2026 with gear icons and an armored character

If your gear keeps dropping at the same Item Level, the problem may not be bad luck. Since The Frozen Divide: Nix, equipment progression in Throne and Liberty has depended on the highest Item Level acquired for weapons, armor, and accessories.

If one of these three falls behind, future drops can stall. Another level 60 weapon may do little when your best accessory remains at level 57. The next step is to identify the weakest gear type, focus on activities that can reward it, and transfer useful Item Levels to your preferred gear through Inheritance.

This guide explains the process without treating Item Level as the only measure of a build. Stats, traits, runes, Skill Cores, and Potential Skills still matter once stronger gear starts dropping.

Returning players can find the current currency and leveling options under Throne and Liberty services.

What Changed With the Nix Gear System?

The official Update 4.0.0 notes removed Enhancement, Transfer, and Sync. Progress now comes from acquiring higher-level equipment, then applying that level to gear worth keeping.

How Item Level and Watermark Work

The game records the highest Item Level acquired in three categories:

  • Weapon
  • Armor
  • Accessory

Their average influences the level of future equipment drops. Players commonly call this hidden average the watermark, though the term is not shown as a named stat in the interface.

Consider this example:

CategoryHighest Item Level acquired
Weapon60
Armor60
Accessory57

The accessory value holds back the average. Farming more weapons may produce useful stats or Potential Skills, but it does not address the progression bottleneck. A higher-level accessory is the drop that matters.

Community testing of the Nix system reports that drops can appear below the current watermark and usually rise in small steps. This is observed behavior rather than an official guaranteed range. Receiving a lower item does not mean your previous progress was lost.

The system appears to remember the highest acquired value. You do not need to keep a weak item equipped solely for its Item Level, but check its Inheritance and market value before removing it.

Why Item Level Gets Stuck

A plateau usually has one of three causes.

One Category Is Lower Than the Others

This is the most common cause. Write down the best weapon, armor, and accessory values separately. The lowest number shows where the next meaningful upgrade needs to come from.

Your Preferred Gear Has Reached Its Cap

Every item has a growth range in its tooltip. Older equipment may stop below the cap of newer Nix gear. Inheritance cannot push an item beyond that limit, so a capped piece eventually needs to be replaced.

The Content Does Not Drop What You Need

Dungeon repetition is useful only when its reward pool matches the weak category. A weapon-focused route cannot repair an accessory bottleneck, no matter how many times it is cleared.

How to Raise Item Level Efficiently

Find the Bottleneck

Compare the highest weapon, armor, and accessory levels ever acquired. Do not judge from the equipped loadout alone.

Target the Right Reward Pool

Current activities distribute gear and materials differently.

ActivityMain progression value
Adventure Codex and Path of AscensionCatch-up gear, Weapon Mastery, and runes for new or returning characters
Redfrost PurificationNix equipment, runes, and crafting materials
Frostbreath Cave and Stone Grave CradleNix Epic weapons, Armor Runes, and Embers
Dimensional TrialsNix gear and Armor Chaos Runes
Hall of IllusionUpdated solo equipment rewards at level 60
Nix crafting

Deterministic gear through Embers or Dimensional Essence

Check the current reward preview before spending limited tokens. Patch updates can move materials and equipment between activities.

Review Every Higher-Level Drop

A new item can have three different forms of value:

  • It raises the category record.
  • It can transfer its level through Inheritance.
  • It can be sold when its Seal status and Potential Skill create market demand.

This review takes less time than recovering an item dissolved too early.

Use Inheritance on Gear Worth Keeping

Inheritance moves a higher Item Level from a source item into a compatible target. The target keeps its traits and Trait Resonance, while the source is consumed.

Before confirming the transfer, check the target’s growth cap, the Inheritance Stone cost, and the Potential Skill shown in the preview. A higher number is not automatically an upgrade when the target cannot hold that level or the transfer removes something valuable.

Inheritance Stones are available from the Resistance vendor and from dissolving equipment at Item Level 51 or above. Review the item first, since a good Potential Skill or sealed sale may be worth more than the returned materials.

How Redfrost Purification Fits Into Progression

Redfrost items are one of the main Nix acquisition routes. They come from Field Events, Remnants of Nix, and field objects, then need to be purified at Shemir’s Armillary Sphere with Flames of Purification and Sollant.

The main risk is leaving the region too early. Unsecured Redfrost items can disappear after death, logout, or leaving Nix. Move valuable finds into the available safe slots and complete purification before ending the session.

Purification does not guarantee an upgrade. Its value comes from repeated chances at Nix equipment across the weapon, armor, and accessory pools.

Inheritance and the Seal System Serve Different Goals

These systems are easy to confuse:

  • Inheritance moves Item Level and related progression between equipment.
  • Sealing controls whether equipment can be traded.

Sealed gear cannot be equipped, but it can be listed on the Auction House. Unsealing makes it untradeable. Re-sealing requires a Seal Key and Sollant. Potential Skills remain relevant during this process and can strongly affect the sale price.

Before unsealing an item, compare its Item Level, growth cap, Potential Skill, and current Auction House value. If the item does not fit your build, selling it may finance a missing category upgrade.

TL Lucent gives players another way to prepare for specific Auction House costs when farming no longer matches the planned upgrade.

Lucent does not raise Item Level directly. It helps only when a suitable tradeable item is available.

FAQ

Does Equipping Lower-Level Gear Reduce the Watermark?
No. The system is based on the highest value acquired in each category, not the lowest item currently equipped.
Why Do Lower-Level Items Still Drop?
A higher average improves the possible drop level but does not make every reward an upgrade. Lower results remain part of the acquisition system.
Do Growthstones Still Raise Equipment Level?
No. Equipment Enhancement was removed with Nix. Current growth comes from acquiring higher Item Levels and moving them through Inheritance.
Are Combat Power and Item Level the Same?
No. Item Level tracks equipment growth. Combat Power reflects a broader setup that includes gear, traits, skills, runes, and other character systems.
Can Old Archboss Weapons Keep Growing?
Queen Bellandir and Tevent weapons remain at Item Level 55 under the Nix system. Their Weapon Skill Cores can still make them useful in certain builds, but their Item Level does not rise further.
What Is the Fastest Way to Raise Item Level?
There is no single activity for every character. The shortest route targets whichever category has the lowest recorded value and uses content that can reward that equipment type.
Can Lucent Raise Item Level?
Not directly. Lucent can fund an Auction House purchase, but the item still needs the right level, growth range, and build value.
